Goal celebrations can
sometimes be more trouble than they are worth. Argentinean striker Martin
Palmermo nearly ended his career when he stood on an advertising board which
collapsed and caused him serious injury. Robbie Fowler's "hilarious"
coke-snorting celebration was also misguided and could have been just as painful
if he had got too close to the goal-line he was pretending to inhale. Now an equally
foolish act from French striker Pascal Nouma has cost him his job at Turkish
giants Besiktas. After scoring against rivals Fenerbahce, he put his hand down
the front of his shorts to "celebrate". This rather graphic
illustration of his pleasure at scoring was not taken well by the club, its
fans, or the Turkish government, and Nouma has been sent packing. Besiktas president
Serdar Bilgili said he had cancelled the player's contract with immediate
effect. "Nouma's actions during the Fenerbahce match are definitely against
Turkish moral values and traditions," Bilgili insisted. "We've decided
to send him back to his country." Turkey's deputy Prime
Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin also got in on the act when he said: "Nouma has
always been a problem for Besiktas - if he wants to have a place in sports, he
has to fix his behaviour."
